Benedict Arnold¹ was considered a traitor, but I've learned a few things that really make me wonder if he really was.

I came across the historian Gerald Horne this year, and he notes that during the time of the independence revolution, europe was moving to abolitionism. If the crown was to enforce these policies it would mean the livelihood of the human capitalists(pro-slavery). Therefore it would be profitable to revolt against the crown, as it was oppression in their eyes.

Arnold was actually a good military leader, victorius in battles for the U.S. that determined the war. However after being disregarded for promotion and payment, he planned a scheme that would have given the british a very advantageous divide and conquer strategy. His young wife Betsy Deblois had a high degree of influence on his decisions.
